DILG-initiated Consultation Dialogue

Last January 20, 2009, the DILG initiated a consultation dialogue with functionaries of the League of 16. The purpose of the dialogue was to come up with ways to face a worst case scenario in case the Supreme Court decides with finality about the unconstitutionality of the cityhood laws of the 16 LGUs.

Last Sunday, January 11, I had the chance of reuniting with three former classmates, Ana, Arlene and Mia, way back in high school. We met in the Tacloban City home of Ana who was having her vacation from her work in Switzerland.

We had a great time together reminiscing everything we can remember after almost 23 years since our graduation on April 7, 1986.

Two Mothers, Five Sons

Barangay San Francisco, Sulat, Eastern Samar was blessed with five sons born to only two mothers last August 2007.

On August 27, 2007, triplets Erwin, Edwin and Edgar was born to Agusto Palines and Myrna Cidro-Palines.

Four days, earlier, August 23, twins Joshua and Daniel were born to Eugene Borja and Clarissa Cultura-Borja.

This season of hope, it is a great opportunity to reflect on the importance of the most important family in the world: the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. as we celebrate Christmas, and the Feast of the Holy Family, let us remember that at present the family is under attack by various groups and organizations who wishes to promote their own belief and understanding of what a family could be. Let us unite and sustain our faith and promote, preserve and protect the traditional familty and let every family be a holy family!

a visit to sulangan

The Parish of St. Anthony of Padua in Sulangan, Guiuan, Eastern Samar, Philippines is a known pilgrimage site (panaaran). People visit the Parish to offer prayers in order to request the intercession of St. Anthony, and the other Saints, for various purposes, and to give thanks for requests answered. See related story here.

The mission marker within the parish compound as a reminder of the Redemptorists' Mission work during the celebration of the 400 years of evangelization of the Island of Samar.

The Parish Church is under construction. If you wish to make donations you may contact Rev. Fr. Jose Lugay, Parish of St. Anthony of Padua, Sulangan, Guiuan, Eastern Samar.

barangay sabang south wins regional LTIA 2007 award

Barangay Sabang South of Borongan, Eastern Samar, Philippines won the 2007 Regional Search for the Lupong Tagapamayapa Incentive Award (LTIA) in barangays within municipalities category for the third straight year which gave the LGU the opportunity to compete with other regional winners in the National level. They only bagged the First Runner-Up plum. This year, since Borongan is supposed to be a City already, they competed in a new level already and still won the regional award beating Tacloban City's, the regional center, bet. They are now under evaluation for the national level awarding.

sharing some seafood-stuffs

Oh yes, this weblog is all about peoples, places and events. But perhaps you'll grant me the indulgence of sharing a bit about some seafood-stuffs which you could enjoy in our beautiful Island of Samar, particularly in Eastern Samar.

This is what we locally call puroton or perhaps probably more appropriately pinurot - it's a seafood with hard shell and whose proper names range from tuwad, dalu-dalo, etc.

This one is what we call no-os, local term for squid.

We call this tarukog. It is a seafood found among rocks and have small shell at the back.

Kupapa, one of the delicious crustaceans found in the waters of Samar.

The best loved of all crustaceans for its very delicious flesh. We call it banagan, in English it is lobster.

sulat, my hometown

Here are some pictures about my hometown of Sulat, one of the municipalities of Eastern Samar province in Eastern Visayas, in Central Philippines

This is a picture of the St Ignatius Parish Church named after the founder of the Jesuit Order. During World War II, it was said that St Ignatius walked atop the Church as a sign of protecting the town from the Japanese Imperial Army.

A view of the Pacific Ocean from Tabuk Beach at Barangay Maglipay. This beach is one of the longest black beaches in the province stretching for about four kilometers up to Barangay Sto Nino.

The road to Barangay San Francisco passing through Ilihan. Ilihan is famed to be an enchanted place where people in the past could ask help from unseen friends with regards to utensils, plates and other materials to be used for big gatherings and occasions such as weddings and fiestas.

This Acacia tree at the heart of the town is also considered enchanted and even thought of as a gateway to the mythical City of Araw - the place of enchanted and invisible people.

This is a view of my hometown Sulat from the Sulat Bridge. It is a quiet and seemingly sleepy hometown but actually active and full of life during special occasions.
